When industrial logistics comes up, most people immediately think of forklifts or perhaps automated conveyor belts. However, it would be a mistake to overlook those seemingly simple four-wheeled platforms that are indispensable in virtually every industry. What is a dolly?
A dolly (dolly cart) is fundamentally a transport device with a low, flat platform equipped with four (or more) swivel wheels. Its essence is simplicity: the load is placed on it, then manually pushed or mechanically towed to its destination. There is no need for a lift, forklift, or special handling training – the dolly simplifies material handling.
In English-language literature, the term “dolly” is a collective concept; in Hungarian, you may also encounter platform cart, flatbed cart, transport frame, or wheeled transport device – this varies by industry. We will use the terms dolly cart and dolly hereafter.
Types of dolly carts
As mentioned, dolly is a collective term. It includes larger-surface platforms, furniture moving pads, wheel dollies that slide under car wheels, and connectable dolly carts that can be towed as a train. Below, we will focus not on these, but on dolly carts in the transport frame category.
These devices have no enclosed bottom, box, or side walls on their own. Their essence is a solid frame equipped with a wheel assembly, specifically designed so that the rim of standard Euro containers (KLT) or pallets fits precisely into it, making them easily movable.
Why use a dolly cart?
The dolly cart is simple, affordable, and extremely versatile. Here are just a few typical use cases:
Ergonomics and occupational safety. Lifting and moving heavy objects is one of the most common sources of workplace injuries. Dollies eliminate unnecessary manual lifting, reduce spinal strain, and lower accident risk.
Efficiency. A single worker using a dolly can move 5–10 times as much load as carrying by hand.
Flexibility. Dollies do not require fixed infrastructure – unlike conveyor belts. They can be used on any route, in any layout.
Low operating cost. A dolly requires no fuel, battery, and has no complex maintenance. A high-quality dolly operates reliably for decades.
Space efficiency. Foldable or stackable versions occupy minimal space during storage.
Where can dolly carts be used?
Almost everywhere. Just a few examples:
- Warehouses and distribution centers – order picking, internal pallet movement, aisle material supply
- Production lines – delivering semi-finished products and components to the next work phase

Adaptation to tow trains: The dollies can also be equipped with special drawbar systems, so when connected together, they can be towed as a “logistics train” within the facility.
FATH Adapter Pallet: FATH developed a unique adapter pallet with AGILOX, onto which these transport carts can be rolled. This is one of the first adapter pallets on the market that driverless automated guided vehicles (AGVs) can also transport.
- Automatic locking: When the forklift or AGV lifts the adapter pallet by just 1 centimeter, a mechanical safety latch automatically locks, securing the wheeled carts on it. This ensures that loaded transport carts do not roll away even on inclined ramps and can be safely placed in high-bay racking systems.
